Parental Involvement

Parents/carers are informed about their child’s progress, behaviour and activities at either end of a session, whichever is the most appropriate or convenient. Children are encouraged to tell parents about activities at the school and perhaps involve them by bringing articles from home. Concerns about a child need to be shared. Staff will always listen to parents and are keen to work in partnership. It is not always possible to talk during school time so parents can speak to the Head Teacher after school or at home, where she is happy to discuss any matters arising. Parents have access to all written records on their own children.

Parents are encouraged to discuss any worries they may have regarding a child’s induction period when they come to the school for an initial visit. Children can bring a favoured item with them (a game, toy or similar) to help make the link between home and school. Staff will endeavour to establish a bond with the child which will provide a building block for the school sessions ahead. Parents can stay with their children until they have settled, should a ‘leaving strategy’ have failed. Such a strategy may be as simple as saying ‘see you a bit later after I’ve done my shopping’. Whatever strategy is used, it is important to share it with the staff so that they are able to reinforce it when necessary.

Parents are always welcome on special occasions such as the Xmas Party, school outings etc, in fact their support is much needed to ensure that an enjoyable event is had by all.

Parents are encouraged to attend meetings to discuss the development of their child and they are kept regularly informed of events happening at Head Start through the newsletters.

Parents and other family members plus friends are always welcome at school concerts.
