These are chosen to provide a balanced view of the world plus an appreciation of the rich diversity of our multicultural society. Children will be encouraged through the use of a variety of materials to develop their self-respect and respect for other members of society. Toys and equipment will be chosen with the differing needs of children in mind. Dolls will reflect sexuality and diversity. Displays will show and reflect a positive image towards the world in which we live. Books will be chosen to meet all the children’s ages
and abilities and to reflect the many differing lifestyles there are in our society. Therewill be a variety of bilingual books. The role play area will be changed regularly to showdifferent cultures, races and the world around us. Computer programmes will be used to give the children opportunities to search the world in which they live.
Special Needs
Staff recognise that children will have a wide range of needs, which will differ from time to time and will consider what support they can offer in meeting them. Planning will be differentiated so all educational needs and disabilities are included.
Discriminatory Behaviour/Remarks
Any discriminatory language or behaviour by children, parents or any other adults is unacceptable at the school. We will take all necessary action to help those responsible understand and overcome their prejudices. We use the racial incident reporting forms and send these to Early Years and Childcare, as appropriate.
Language
Basic information, written and spoken, will be clearly communicated and help sought where there is a difficulty.. Bilingual/multilingual children and adults are an asset to the school and their languages will be valued and respected and used as part of the curriculum.
Food
Working in partnership with parents, children’s medical and cultural dietary needs will be met. We will introduce children to foods from around the world.
Review
The policy and implementation thereof, will be regularly reviewed at staff meetings with an annual review by the ENCO.
